<NOTE> 2007 Jersey Shore Council Executive Board as adopted this policy! The top leader (Cubmaster, Scoutmaster, Crew Adviser), Den Leader and Assistant must be trained in order to recharter. If your unit leader is not trained at the time of recharter then your charter will not be accepted. (Fast Start, New Leader Essentials, Leader Specific, and Youth Protection)

1- Orientation
Fast Start Training - It provides information to help the new leaders for the first few weeks until they can attend New Leader Essentials and Leader Specific Training. There is a written fast start guide (Cub Fast Start Guide), a DVD, or an Internet site, which can be used to receive the training. (online link)
2- Basic Training - Required Training After attending New Leader Essentials and the Specific Training for their registered position the leader may wear a trained patch on his/her uniform.
New Leader Essentials - Highlights the values, aims, history, funding, and methods of scouting. It addresses how these aims are reached with age-appropriate programs within Cub Scouting, Boy Scouting, Varsity Scouting, and Venturing. This training uses video, discussion, handouts led by an instructor for approximately 90 minutes. This is completed once.
Leader Specific Training - This training is specifically for the registered position a leader is in: Tiger Cubs, Cub Den Leader, Webelos Den Leader, Cubmaster, Committee Member. It is led by an instructor with the use of visual aids, discussion, and handouts and can be up to 2 hours long. Anytime a leadership position changes, the leader should be trained for that specific position.
Youth Protection - A training video, DVD, or online training required by all leaders discussing the protection of our youth. It is suggested that if you have parents/guardians helping with activities, overnighters, etc they be youth protection trained as well. (online link)
3 - Supplemental Training - Courses conducted on a district, council, regional, or national basis. These courses give additional information on specific areas of the Cub Scout program.
Roundtable - monthly training, information gathering meetings held by each district. All Cub Scout leaders are urged to take part in these fun and informative sessions. Roundtable is planned around the Cub Scout theme and Webelos Activity badges. Up-coming district and council events are discussed. After attending your roundtables, leaders will come back to your pack leaders meeting well informed and ready to complete plans for your pack and den program for the next month.
Workshops - offered by districts and councils to enhance skills in special areas. Examples of workshop topics are: Blue and Gold, Membership Recruitment, Webelos-to-Scout Transition, Re-Chartering, Annual Program Planning, etc. Look for these in your Council or District.
Pow Wow or University of Scouting - Annual Cub Scout and Boy Scout leaders' conference to gather and share program ideas. Classes are offered on various subjects. All leaders are encouraged to attend. Jersey Shore Council's University of Scouting can have up to 75 classes to choose from at this event.
Outdoor Leader Skills for Webelos Leaders - continuation of Webelos Leader Specific but in the outdoors and overnight. Webelos Leaders must continue (OWL Training) to be considered trained and to bring their boys out on overnight camping trips.
Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation (BALOO) - The pack can go on overnight pack family camping trips at a council approved facility as long as they have a trained leader from BALOO.
Trainer Development Conference - one-day course designed to acquaint trainers with the plans, procedures, and methods of leader trainer. All trainers should attend this conference offered annually by the Council. Pack trainers should attend this as well.
Camp School - All adults serving as camp directors and program directors of specific camps (day camps, webelos resident camp, Boy Scout) must attend regional three-day courses.
College of Commissioner Science - offered annually by the council to train the district, roundtable, and unit commissioners. The college offers Bachelor, Masters, and Doctorate levels of training.
Philmont Training Center- At Philmont Scout Ranch, Cimarron, NM, serves as the National Volunteer Training Center for BSA. Week long training is planned as a family experience, which includes programs for all ages while you attend the conference of your choice. Participation is by invitation from your district or council.
Den Chief Training - All Den Chiefs should attend along with the Cubmaster and den leaders. Den Chief Training is full of fun, excitement, and full of information to help the Boy Scout do a good job as a junior leader.
4 - Advanced Training
Cub Scout Trainer Woodbadge
This is a six-day group training course designed to provide advanced training skills and instill more dedicated involvement in Cub Scouting. A limited number of regional courses are offered each year. This training course is by invitation. You can request information from you District Executive.
Other Training
Safe Swim Defense/Safety Afloat - To prevent injuries or accidents we all must follow the rules of safe swim defense and safety afloat. The course can be taken online or through district training. (online link)
